JPEG XL (JXL) is a relatively new file format for photos and images. Development began back in 2018, but the format was not introduced until 2022. Contrary to what the name might suggest, the XL does not stand for particularly large or high-resolution images, but for JPEG X (of no particular significance) L – long-term, as the JPEG format is to be replaced by JPEG XL in the long term.

The advantages of JXL are higher efficiency (speed and higher compression) and better quality during conversion. The iPhone 16 Pro uses JPEG XL on request for ProRAW photos of the highest quality.

As the distribution of JPEG XL-capable software and devices will still be very limited in 2026, it may be necessary to convert JXL to JPG. Note: As JPEG is a lossy format, the conversion may result in a (slight) loss of quality depending on the source material. This can be easily done in the browser using our online tool. After the conversion you will receive a JPEG file which can be used and shared as usual.
